The SWS operates a professional certification program "to identify qualified individuals to assess and manage the Nation’s resources." The SWS published the first issue of the journal ''Wetlands'' in September 1981, and it is currently published by Springer on behalf of the SWS. In March 1980 the SWS was founded with the inspiration of Richard Macomber, who was a biologist with the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
